Support of old PATA raid controller

By wes - Posted on 17 October 2008

I have a "brother in arms" in the tech community who asked if I could help him out w/ Samba on a Dell 600SC server that he'd acquired. He had loaded RH ES3 on it and had successfully installed Samba, but it wouldn't receive connections. I fought with it for a while and got it to accept connections from itself with the smbclient \\localhost\samba_dir and authenticated but is as far as it would go.

So, after a little more tinkering with IPTABLES (on a hunch I thought that was it) I convinced him to install Ubuntu. I fired up the install only to find the LSI CERC ATA100 raid controller wasn't supported. I Googled around a bit and found a post on Ubuntu Forums, post # 9 and 10 to be exact, that mentioned the firmware had to be downgraded to a lesser version in order to make it work. Aint that some stuff!

Anyway, behind me Ubuntu is happily installing with the same Raid controller in play and I couldn't be happier either.
